Albert Swain Pioneer Teamster Dies in Ely

Albert John Swain, 88, died Wednesday in an Ely hospital. He was born May 30, 1880 at Fayette, Utah.
He was the son of Albert and Elizabeth Swain.
He married Edna Probert at the Johnson Ranch in Steptoe Valley on Oct. 2, 1904. She died Jan 8 1937 at Ely.
He married Silvia (sic--should be Sophia) Robinson (sic--should be Robison) in Ely on April 20, 1946.

During early 1905, Mr. Swain accompanied by his wife Edna, made trips with a freight outfit between Old Toana and Ely driving 12 horses with two wagons and a feed cart. They brought supplies into Ely and on the return loaded ore from the now defunct mining camp of Oceola and from the Star Mine in Spring Valley. They also drove teams hauling surveyors for the Nevada Northern Railroad when that line was being planned.
He lived in Provo, Utah, for some years where he worked for his father-in-law at a livery stable and drove freight wagons from Wendover to Ibapah, Utah, between 1910 and 1916. He moved to Gold Hill, Utah, in 1924 and back to Ely in 1932.
Surviving are his wife, sons George R of Holden, Utah, Ward of Elko, Don A of Sacramento, and daughter Mrs. Chester A Larson of McGill.
Also surviving are 16 grand-children, 23 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Willliam W of Rigby, Utah, and Marion R. of Soda Springs, Idaho. Also five stepchildren including Mrs. Walter Falkenburg of Ely, DeMar Robison of Elko, and 11 step-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wilson-Bates Mortuary with burial in the Ely City Cemetery.
