Esther Dockter, daughter of Gottlieb J. and Rosina (Thurn) Dockter was born July 21, 1922 northwest of Venturia, ND. She was the second youngest of nine children and attended country school through the eighth grade.

Esther was united in marriage to Leonard Baumann on September 10, 1944 in the Reformed Church parsonage at Wishek, ND. They made their home on the family farm west of Ashley. They retired in the fall of 1969 and moved to their new home in Ashley. Leonard died February 19, 2004.

Esther was a wonderful homemaker. She loved to cook, especially German food. She always had a large garden and canned most of the produce. She sewed many quilts for her family and was a Zion Lutheran Church Quilter until she moved into the Ashley Medical Center Apartments in 2011.

Esther painted, wallpapered, stained and varnished woodwork in many homes in Ashley with her friend, Anna Bendewald. Esther was a member of a bowling league for many years. Leonard and Esther were custodians for Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley for ten years. Esther moved into the Ashley Nursing Home in August of 2013.

Grateful for having shared Esther’s life are her children, Larry (Marjorie) Baumann and Patricia (Douglas) Schlabsz, both of Ashley and Wanda (Jamie) Johnson of Bismarck; five grandsons, Anthony (Donna) Baumann of Calhoun, GA, Terence (Cynthia) Baumann of Halliday, ND, Steven (Jen) Schlabsz of Wichita, KS, Michael (Rachel) Schlabsz of Cedar Rapids, IA and Taylor Johnson of Bismarck; six great-grandchildren, Alexis Baumann, Karl Baumann, Jordanna Baumann, Alexandra Schlabsz, Elizabeth Schlabsz and Henry Schlabsz; one step-great-grandchild, Alex Fernandez; one sister-in-law, Louise Dockter and many nieces and nephews.
