Helen Edna Dean, called "Edna" by her family, was born at Nankin Mill, Wayne County, Michigan on 16 February 1873 to William Day Dean and his wife Lydia (Joy) Dean. At the time of her birth Nankin mill was operated as "Dean & Joy" and was co-owned by her father and uncle Samuel Joy but her Uncle sold his half of the Mill in June 1873 and her father became sole owner.
About 1883 the family moved to Northville for about three years. From 1887-1890 the family lived on the 'Fisher Farm near Plymouth'. About 1890 the family moved to Detroit and on June 26, 1891 Edna began working for Paige Chope Stevens Wholesale Paper House as a bookkeeper. The 1900 census showed Edna employed as a bookkeeper and living in her parents house in Detroit.
Edna married to Clarence J. Mason in 1902. Her brother wrote: "Thursday December 4, 1902 Cold and cloudy. This is Edna's wedding day. She did have one or two streaks of sun but they were very scarce. Anna & I ...were the last ones there [Trumbull Ave. Pres. Church] except the minister, he came at the same time. Mr. & Mrs. Mason, sons & wives, Father & Mother, sons & wives, except Herbert & wife, & Lydia Joy was there. The ceremony took place just a minute or two before 8 P.M. Edna got lovely presents about $87 in money. Paige Chope sent a tray of silver spoons, knives & forks Etc."
Edna and Clarence never had any children of their own. They lived in Detroit and had a summer cottage on Silver Lake where they spent time with their siblings and many nephews and nieces.
About 1928/29 Edna and Clarence moved to Los Angeles and they resided at 13525 VanOwen Street. Clarence passed away in 1943 and Edna died in 1959.
