Mary C. Barnette Steel
CHESAPEAKE - Mary C. Barnette Steel, 92, of Chesapeake, went to be with her heavenly Father on Oct. 6, 2000.
She was born in Roper, N.C., on July 24, 1908, the daughter of the late Marcus and Caroline Clifton. She was a retired beautician and past president of the local Norfolk Chapter of the American War Mothers. She was a recent member of Centerville Baptist Church in Chesapeake and a former member of Trinity Baptist Church of Norfolk for approximately 40 years. She also attended Hickory United Methodist Church of Chesapeake with her children and grandchildren. A very loving woman of strong faith and religion, her life was an example of a model Christian.
Alert until her passing, she maintained a loving relationship with her family and friends. She was predeceased by her husbands, Samuel J. Barnette and John B. Steel and her daughter, Eileen B. Trueblood.
She is survived by her children, James C. Barnette and his special friend, Margie Kelly, Elizabeth B. Gossett and her husband, Bob, all of Virginia Beach, and Alan A. Barnette and his wife, Victoria, of Chesapeake; grandchildren, Susan Burns, Robin Gronemus, Jerry Barnette, Mark Barnette, Kevin Barnette, Chris Barnette and Shannon Barnette; six great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Mary Ann Melchers.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel with the Rev. Thomas L. Mercer and the Rev. David Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. Friends may join the family at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.
