Dr. Herbert (Herb) D. Smith passed away August 6, 2019 at his home in Evans, Ga. He was 84 years old.
Herb was born February 17, 1935 in Pembroke, Ga. He was the son of Emory P. Smith, Sr. and Flaudie Williams Smith. He was the youngest of six children. Herb received a Medical Degree in Psychiatry from the Medical College of Georgia. After his Service in the U.S. Army, he went into Private Practice until 1977. He also practiced psychiatry at several Mental Health facilities in South Carolina and Georgia before retiring from Phoenix Center Behavioral Health Child and Family counselling in June 2000.
He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Evans.
Herb had a passion for painting. He also loved to bird watch, and he combined his two favorite hobbies to create extraordinary art. His paintings of various birds, as well as landscapes and old homesteads were greatly admired by his friends and family. He was an avid music lover. He taught himself to play the guitar, banjo and accordion. He also enjoyed singing, he had a beautiful Tenor voice. In the 1970s, he and a group of fellow doctors formed a band and played together at events throughout Savannah, Ga. He was a published author who wrote the Novel ‘The Elements So Mixed’ in 1971 under his pen name Brian Deen. Throughout his career, he had many articles on Psychiatry and Hypnosis Published in Medical Journals. He had a lifetime of achievements and received many awards, such as ‘Outstanding American in the South’ and ‘Who’s Who in Psychiatry’ to name a few. He had a passion for animals, he especially loved dogs. He had many as companions throughout his lifetime. He spoiled the dogs so much that people joked that when they die, they want to be reincarnated as one of his dogs. He was a beloved father to his two daughters Cheryl and Lisa. Their hearts are broken with his passing, but they are comforted by the years of wonderful memories they have made with their father. He was a proud ‘Pappy’ to 6 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He was known for his quick wit and his infectious smile. He enjoyed making people laugh, he would tell jokes and stories any time he had an ear that would listen.
Herb was preceded in death by his father and his mother. His siblings, Helen Smith Strickland, Annelle Smith Bedingfield, Carolyn Smith Scheflen, and Emory P. Smith, Jr. His first wife of 53 years Patricia T. Smith.
He is survived by his wife Sandra Lackey Peaden Smith. His three step-children and nine step- Grandchildren. His sister Barbara Smith (William) Tippins. His Daughters Cheryl Smith (Danny) Covington and Lisa Smith Kolb. His Grandchildren Michael (Misty) Covington, Sr., Brian (Jennifer) Covington, Danny (Cassie) Covington, Jr., April Ross Green, Jordan (Brett) Ross, Rachel Poole (Chris) Denney and 18 great grandchildren. As well as his many nieces and nephews.
The celebration of his life was held Thursday, August 8, 2019, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Evans.
