His father, Andrew, died in 1936 when Fernie was 10 years old. This left the raising of the children to his mother and older siblings.
Fernie served in late WWII while still in Canada in the Royal Canadian Navy on the east coast of Canada. Shortly after the war, he was released but then re-enlisted for the Korean War. Upon returning from the Korean War, he stayed in the RCN until his retirement in 1971, after which he worked for Telus for 25 years.
Fernie married the love of his life Anne Lauman in 1948 and they had five boys- Andy, Terry, Gary, Tom and Lloyd. He and Anne were married for more than 67 years at the time of his death.
Fernie was a contributor to his church, community and his family. He was active in the Navy Veterans and often mentored widows who had lost their husbands and needed a hand getting through the paperwork, etc. He was very active in the Knights of Columbus and acted as an Usher at St. Gerard's Catholic Church well into his 80's. He was known for his quick wit and his constant yearning for knowledge. He was always up for a debate and taught his sons the art of debating.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Anne, his sons and daughter-in-laws, his siblings (Fr. Joe, Andrew, Donnie, Dorothy) and many grand children and great grandchildren.
May you rest in Peace Fernie and enjoy your reunion with your family in heaven and "don't take any wooden nickels" up there. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Gerard's Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Drive SW) on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 11:00 am.
