John was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (Lauman), three brothers who died in infancy, brother Chris, sister Toni, and sister Marg; son Wayne and grandson Brian (Goddard).

John served in the Royal Canadian Artillery during WWII and rejoined the military as a clerk in the Royal Canadian Engineers and served in Japan during the Korean War and was later posted to Regina where he served until his retirement in 1967.
