Lena Irene Van Valin was born December 15, 1888, in western, Kansas, the daughter of Franklin B. & Sarah A. Cope. On October 1, 1908, she was married to Joseph P. Van Valin at Nelson, Nebraska. To this union was born one son, Joseph Lyle.
Lena lived in Nelson much of her life. She was baptized in the Christian Church of Nelson in February, 1904 and remained a member for 68 years.
Lena Van Valin passed away July 19, 1972, at the Good Samaritan Home in Nelson at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son and four brothers. Survivors include 3 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Ethel A. Kauffman of Hyattsville, Maryland and Mrs. Olive Tetterton of Woodriver (sic), Nebraska.
Funeral services were Saturday, July 22, 1972 at 2 p.m. at the Christian Church. The Rev. Victor Schwarz officiated and burial was in the Nelson Cemetery. The Klawitter Funeral Home, Nelson, was in charge.
