Joseph Hall is descended from a family of Quakers who settled first in Maryand in the 1640s. His grandfather, Moses Hall (1731-1801), left Maryland to settle in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Bowman. They moved to Fayette County in the late 1750s and raised a large family that included Richard Hall (1766-1820), father of Joseph. Richard married Sarah Stephens and they had nine children. The location of most of the graves of both generations is not known.
Joseph's sister, Martha Jane Hall, married William Shipley and settled near Confluence, PA; they are buried in Old Fairview Cemetery (also known as Johnson Chapel) near there.
Joseph married Mary Matthews around 1805. They settled in Ohiopyle and had 9 children: Jonathan (1807-1887, m. Nancy Layland), Garrett (1808-1878, 1m. Margaret Lindeman, 2m. Sarah Sloan), Joseph (1910-1887, m. Elizabeth), Susan (1813-1896), m. William Morrison), Martha (1815-1893), Isaac (1815-1875, m. Nancy Morrison, Samuel A. Hall (1825-1904, m. Mary Ann Morrison), Josiah (1827-1906, m. Jane Thorpe), and Melinda (1834-1892).
