Esther Habersham Elliott was the daughter of Charlotte Bull Barnwell and Rt. Rev. Stephen Elliott, Jr., Episcopal bishop of Georgia and a founder of the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee.
Esther Habersham married Francis Asbury Shoup at All Saints chapel in Sewanee on June 29, 1871. To this union three children were born, Francis Asbury "Frank" Shoup (1872), Charlotte Barnwell Shoup (1874), and Stephen Elliott Shoup (1885).
Mrs. Shoup was the librarian at the University of the South, and a member of the society of Daughters of Colonial Governors, and the Colonial Dames and was an associate member of the Sisters of St. Mary.
Her funeral was held at All Saints chapel at the University of the South.
