Jacob's birth name was Jacob Friederich Oehler. He was the son of Johann Jacob "John" Oehler and Maria Katharina "Mary"(Schnell) Oehler. The family changed the name to "Aler" (sometimes written as "Ailer") when they came to the US in 1832.

Jacob was the second husband of Margaret Almeda (Browning) Hardy Aler (1826-1872). They were married on September 30, 1858 in Muskingum County, Ohio and they had two daughters - Rebecca and Laura. Jacob was also the stepfather of three boys from Margaret's first marriage to Kinsey Hardy - Samuel, William and Kinsey Hardy, Jr.

Please note: Jacob's will was probated in Muskingum County, Ohio in September 1864. His wife and children moved to Henry County, Illinois by 1870 and then on to Wayne County, Iowa where Jacob owned some land. I believe that Jacob is buried in this cemetery with his parents and brother.
