Charles Richards Towson was the third child and second son of Obadiah George Towson and Lydia Tyler Richards. Through his father he is said to be a descendent of William Towson, a settler of Towson, MD.

On June 12, 1893, he married Rosa Haseltine Stanard. The couple had at least three sons and three daughters. He was survived by sons Charles Richards Towson, Jr. of White Plains, NY; Emory Erdman Towson of Glen Falls, NY; and James Wilbur Towson of Mount Vernon, NY; and daughters Lydia L., wife of L.A. Pollock; Champe Thorton, wife of Joseph David Lenox; and Eleanor Tyler, wife of Arthur Burlingham Barney. They may have also had a daughter named Rosa Stanard Towson.

According to his obituary published in the New York Herald Tribune, he worked in real estate until 1893 at which point he became the general secretary of the Roanoke, Virginia YMCA. Transfers in 1895 and 1898 ultimately led to his appointment as head of the industrial department in 1907. He would serve until 1923 when he retired from the YMCA. Following his retirement, he served for several years as the president of the Silver Bay Association, the Silver Bay Preparatory School for Boys, and as the personnel director of the Deering Milliken Company.
