Charles Richard YORK is the son; eleventh child, of Joab YORK and his wife Martha Lucinda YEARGIN from Randolph County, North Carolina. Charles was very close to his brother Cornelius Semore YORK, only three years younger. No doubt these two brothers decided they wanted to get off the farm and become entrepreneurial business associates in sales.

It is suggested both brothers had a plan to marry. Then move into the business center of Brazil, Clay County, Indiana just across the stale line from Illinois to startup a new business adventure together.

First Charles YORK, age 27, married Jeannett R SWAN, age 23, on 29 Sep 1880 in Edgar County, Illinois. Next Cornelius YORK, age 26, married Kate Lillie MARSHALL, age 17 on 1882 in Brazil, Clay County, Indiana where he had opened a retail store. They operated a retail music store in Brazil. They sold sewing machines, York Pianos, pump Organs, and produce according to the U S Census records. Cornelius and his wife had small children so he operated the retail store in Brazil. Charles and his wife had no children so he was a traveling salesman for sewing machines and pianos based out of his brother's retail store in Brazil. Most likely the wives were clerks in the store.
