OBITUARY.
MRS. CAROLINE ALKE.
The death took place Friday last at the residence of her daughter Mrs. Jas. Murray (Newtown), of one of the oldest inhabitants of Toowoomba in Mrs. Caroline Alke.
The deceased lady, who had reached the great age ot 95 years, was born on September 11. 1835 at Yitteide near the Harz Mountains, Brunswick, Germany.
On Easter Monday. 1862 she married Mr. Heinrich Alke, of Hanover. Six years later the couple left for Australia, landing in Brisbane in March 1868 and almost immediately set out for the Darling Downs.
Mr. Alke was by profession a bootmaker and commenced a business in Toowoomba and he continued this until his death 35 years ago when it has since been carried on by his son, Mr. M. Philip Alke.
The late Mrs. Alk was a highly respected member of the Lutheran Church, Phillip-street. She retained her faculties till the last. She was predeceased by her husband and eight children. She is survived by two sons and three daughters, namely. Philip Alke and Fred Alke both of Toowoomba. Mrs. Jas. Murray Newtown Mrs. J. Wilson (Mort-street) and Mrs. J. Collins (Peranga). There are also 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon to the Toowoomba Cemetery where Rev. Gutekunst officiated at the graveside.
