Capt. F. L. McKnight died at his home on Irion Hill after an illness of several weeks. He was one of the oldest citizens of the East Texas country. He came to Texas with his parents when he was quite young and settled near Alto in Cherokee county, where he lived until he reached manhoods estate. He was married to Miss Cora Clute and they moved to Douglass and resided there continuously until 8 years ago when they moved to Nacogdoches and have remained here since. To their union were born nine children, five boys and four girls all of whom are now living. Mrs. Kate S. Sanders, Nacogdoches; Mrs. Mariah Murphey, Nacogdoches; Mrs. Lizzie Weaver,Dodge; Mrs. Laura Coats, Big Springs; John, Jim, Felix, Arch McKnight, Oklahoma; and Frank McKnight, San Francisco, California. All of his children have been here during his illness except Frank, though some were compelled to return to their home. Felix was with him when he died.

Capt. McKnight was an old Confederate soldier, and went to the war from this county along with the first companies that went to the front and served until the close of the war. He was made captain in his company after reaching the front and distinguished himself for his bravery on the field of battle.

While living at Douglass he conducted a hotel for a number of years, at the same time being interested in farming and conducting a large farm. He was a lifelong member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, a good man and a splendid citizen, and his death will be much regretted by all who knew him.

Dr. Jim McKnight, an older brother of Capt. McKnight and the last survivor of the old family, he being 84 years of age, was here from his home in Pollok [Angelina county, TX] during the illness of his brother and spent several days.
