Carolyn Kay Westlake Chapman, age 77, of Marysville, died peacefully Monday, June 24, 2019 at Memorial Gables. A woman of inspiration and strength throughout her longtime victory over cancer, she was instrumental in organizing “Relay For Life” in Union County. She was known for spreading hope and encouragement to others struggling with the ravages of cancer. A longtime bookkeeper and clerk, she worked early in her career for the A & P Grocery Store in downtown Marysville. She was an associate of the company for many years, traveling to Bellefontaine and various stores in the central Ohio area. She also was a former associate for the Sears and Roebuck catalog store in Marysville. Throughout the years, she also helped keep records for her family’s business, Ron Chapman Excavating. Carolyn grew up in Broadway where she attended grade school and Northwestern High School in Raymond. She was a cheerleader during junior high and high school. She also attended Millcreek Church of Christ. As a youth, she was very active in 4-H and showed sheep with the Westlake family. She was named the Ohio Suffolk Queen during the 1950’s. She enjoyed her family at Indian Lake, camping, sewing, handicrafts and shopping. She and her husband, Ron, spent many winters in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Carolyn’s most precious hobby was being with her family and grandchildren. She was born March 1, 1942 on her family’s farm just south of Broadway to the late Samuel and Mary Hartshorn Westlake. She was also preceded in death on April 9, 2019 by her son, Keith Alan Chapman; great-grandchildren, Colin and Griffin Chapman; her siblings and in-laws, Junior Westlake, Judy Westlake, Rosemary and Dewey Shirk, George and Phyllis Westlake and Willard Ferrell; and her father-and mother-in-law, Dick and Alice Chapman. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ronald D. Chapman, whom she married September 16, 1958; her children, Kimberly (Tim) Moore of Mechanicsburg, Kristi (Jerry) Eads of Milford Center and Kevin (Robin) Chapman of Marysville; daughter-in-law Tonia Chapman of Marysville; her grandchildren, Duane (Kristi) Moore, Amber (Terry) Gladman, Aaron (Melissa) Eads, Melissa (John) Rickman, Joseph (Candis) Eads, Kyle (Sarah) Chapman, Dustin (Kylee) Chapman, Shane Chapman, Christy (Chris) Flewwellin, Abby Whiteside, Chelsey Stillings, Derek (Grace) Chapman, Jessica (Garrett) Carpenter and Kaitlyn Chapman; her great-grandchildren, Donovan, Alex, Veronica, Trey, Addison, Sam, Torey, Delaney, Miranda, Graham, Sawyer, Grant, Kale, Marlie, Ben and Molly; her sister, Phyllis Ferrell of Marysville; her brother, Gerald “Bud” (Julia) Westlake of Marysville; her sisters-in-law, Sandy (Tom) Young of Bellefontaine, Judy (Bill) Wical of Bellefontaine, Deanna (Roger) Shumway of Raymond and Becky (Gene) Drumm of Bellefontaine; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2019 at Underwood Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Rev. Jack Knox will officiate and burial will be beside her son, Keith, at Broadway Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Nationwide Children’s Hospital (in memory of Colin and Griffin Chapman) or Memorial Gables.
