When Arthur Chase was nine years old the family moved to Claremont, New Hampshire, and this was his home for the balance of his life.
Arthur Chase and Frederick Norton Freeman were the founders of Theta Chi Fraternity at nine o'clock p.m. on April 10, 1856 at Norwich University, Norwich, Vermont.
Chase graduated from Norwich shortly after the founding of the fraternity and went to Harvard to study law. He practiced law in his hometown of Claremont and was active in civic life and politics. During the Civil War, he organized and trained a local regiment of volunteers but could not join them in battle due to growing health problems.
After the war, Chase entered the newspaper business owning and operating the Claremont National Eagle. He eventually retired to life as a gentleman farmer.
Chase was married in 1863 to Garafelia Davis. Seven children were born of the union, four of whom - two sons and two daughters - reached adult life and survived their father.
