Clifford Best Instantly Killed by Bolt - Tragedy Saddens Community
This vicinity was sadly shocked on Saturday afternoon when Clifford Best, one of our much-loved citizens, was killed by lightning. Apparently he had started home when the storm struck. Mrs. Joe Ludwig, who lives near the field in which he was working, saw the tractor traveling in the wrong direction and decided that something was wrong, and called John Noel, who found Best slumped over the fender of the tractor, dead. Words cannot express the sympathy we feel for these, our friends, in their bereavement.
[from truncated copy]...he had been at work with his rubber tired tactor. He had unhitched his implement and headed down the road westward when the bolt struck. A neighbor saw the tractor running out of control and summoned John Noel. When the latter reached the scene, he found the tractor stalled against a woven wire fence. Bet's dead body was slumped down over the fender and was extricated from the machine with difficulty.
His torn hat indicated he had been struck on the head, but his body was unmarked except for a small spot on the right side of his head from which hair was burned and the broken skin in the palm of his right hand.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Houts officiating and Rev. V. A. Pendueton assisting. Hundreds of neighbors and friends attended the services. Internment was made at the Hennessey cemetery.
Clifford Orville Best, son of Hannah A. and William A. Best, was born near Wilsonville Nebraska July 23, 1895, and passed away near his home southeast of Hennessey on Saturday, June 6, 1942, as the age of 46 years, 10 months, and 14 days.
His parents moved to Hennessey when he was four years old, and the Hennessey community remained his home until his death. In 1918, he married to Miss Kate Mae Tuggle, of Hennessey. To this union nine children were born, seven girls and two boys, all of whom are left to mourn his death: LeRoy of Hennessey; Mrs. Norma Hill, of near Hennessey; Mrs. Marie Gill, of San Diego, Calif; Lois, Iva Lou, Ira Lee, Oscar, Virginia, and Gail, all of the home. also five sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Zella Chartier and Mrs. Clara Kneese of Hennessey, Mrs. Rhoda Kernes, Higgins, Texas, Mrs. Rissa Nicholson, Wilsonville, Nebraska; Mrs. Bertha Nicholson, Beaver City, Nebraska; Floyd and Albert best of Hennessey. One brother, Everett, preceded him in death during World War One. Many other relatives and a host of friends mourn the loss of this loved one. He was indeed a kind and loving neighbor whom all will miss.
