Savannah, June 20- One man is dead here this morning and several others are in hospitals in more or less serious condition as a result of firing into a mob assembled in front of the jail where Walter Lee, charged with criminal assault on a white woman, is being held.
Claude Parker, Jr., the dead man, was shot in the stomach and died a few minutes later in a hospital.
The mob, estimated at more than 2,000 persons, formed shortly before midnight and increased in number.
The militia was called to preserve order. Sheriff Merritt Dixon told the mob that the jail would be defended against any attempt at storm. … The machine guns were brought to action at 1 o' clock when the mob grew more menacing
