LEXINGTON - Mr. Ralph Echols of Lexington, Va., died on July 5, 1990. He was 90 years old. Mr. Echols was born in Caperton, W. Va., in 1900, the son of the late Ernest and Nannie Carter Echols.

Mr. Echols attended the Virginia Military Institute for two years as a member of the class of 1921. While a cadet, he served in the Student Army Training Corps. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army to assist the war effort in the production of West Virginia coal. He was an engineer with the Appalachian Electric Power Company for a number of years, later joining Echols Brothers, Inc., contractors in Staunton, Va. After resigning from the firm, he continued in engineering and construction until his retirement in 1965.

He is survived by is wife, Rowena Lee Carper Echols, Lexington; a son, Ralph Gordon Echols, Houston, Texas; three brothers, Porter Burks Echols and Percy Pug Echols, both of Lynchburg; Hubert Lee Echols, Staunton; four grandchildren, Ralph James Echols, Blacksburg; Gordon Alexander Echols, Alexandria; Annette Lee Palmer, McKinney, Texas; Stuart Patton Echols, West Palm Beach, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, John Russell Echols and Emily Patton Echols.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Glasgow Cemetery by the Rev. James B. Grimmer. The family will receive friends at their home in Lexington. The family has requested in lieu of flowers that any contributions be made in Ralph Echols' name to the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital or the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lexington, Va.
