Margaret Russell Bates Hane
Hane, Margaret Russell Bates, former resident of Los Angeles, died October 17, 1996 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, of respiratory complications resulting from a stroke she suffered in 1987. She was 86 years of age and was the daughter of Jessie Walter Bates and Lois Meriwether Bates of Atlanta, Georgia. Margaret was the wife and partner to Franklin Harper Elmore Hane who died in 1952.
She leaves her three loving daughters: Margaret Albrecht of Issaquah, Washington, Barbara Desforges of Beverly Hills, California, Grace Hedemann Miller of Detroit, Michigan and her devoted niece, Adele Wockenfuss of Fort Walton Beach, Florida. She is also survived by nine precious grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, a great-nephew, a great-niece and their families.
Margaret received her Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and Master's degrees in Political Science from the University of Southern California. Her second Master's was in Pupil Personnel Counseling from California State University, Los Angeles.
During her life she was a reporter for the Atlanta Journal, a member of Theta Sigma Phi, a Golden Eagle, a teacher and rehabilitation counselor. She became President and Chairman of the Board of her own chain of gasoline service stations under the name of Magnum Oil Company from 1952 through 1962 as well as five other companies. She was a member for over forty years at Immanuel Presbyterian Church.
She belonged to the following societies: Pi Beta Phi (fraternal) and several heritage societies: Daughters of the American Colonists, Society of the Descendants of the Colonial Clergy, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, The Society of the Dames of the Court of Honor.
She was a devoted and loyal mother and wife. One could say she was a "Woman for All Seasons." She was loved, admired by many and is sorely missed.
Burial services are private. The family suggests donations be made to the Los Angeles Heart Association in her memory.
