Vilda H Johnson Oyler, 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes at her home in Boise, Idaho, on Friday, June 14, 2019. Vilda was born on January 6, 1928, in Hibbard, Idaho, to James Roy and Lovernia Elizabeth Hinckley Johnson. The sixth of seven children, Vilda had two sisters and four brothers. Vilda attended elementary school in Hibbard, Idaho, followed by high school in Rexburg, Idaho. After graduation from high school, she attended LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, Utah. After graduation, she went to work as a secretary in Salt Lake City. At the age of 23, she served a 2-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denmark. While in Denmark, she met her future husband, who was also serving a mission for the Church there. After they returned from their missions, they dated until he was drafted into the Army. Vilda was married to Neldon Duane Oyler in the Salt Lake Temple, where they were sealed for eternity, on July 2, 1953. After a short honeymoon, Neldon reported to Fort Ord and Vilda went to live with her mother in Hibbard, Idaho. Their first child, a daughter, was born in Rexburg, Idaho, while Neldon was serving in the Army, stationed in Germany. Vilda and the baby continued to live with her mother until Neldon was honorably discharged from the Army. The small family then lived in Rexburg for a while where their second daughter was born. They then moved to Provo, Utah, where Vilda cared for the two small children while Neldon attended Brigham Young University (BYU). While spending the summer of 1957 with Neldon’s parents, their third child and first son was born. It was a hard labor and delivery, and the baby was born with several birth defects. He never made it home, but passed away in the hospital after a week, and was buried in the Loa Utah Cemetery. After Neldon graduated from BYU, the family moved to St. Anthony, Idaho, where Vilda worked as a mother and homemaker while Neldon worked at the State Reform School. In 1964, the family, which now included five more children, moved to Boise, Idaho. In Boise, the family was blessed with another child, making a total of nine children (seven of which were daughters). Vilda loved The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings during her life, including a visiting teacher/ ministering sister, primary teacher, young women teacher, both ward and state Relief Society president, and Sunday School teacher to name a few. She served others throughout her life. She was a glowing example to her children and instilled the love of Heavenly Father and the Savior, love of the gospel, love of their fellowman, and the love of serving others in her children. She is preceeded in death by her parents, James Roy and Lovernia Elizabeth Hinckley Johnson; four brothers and one sister; her husband, Neldon Duane Oyler; her son, Shayne J Oyler; and a granddaughter, Lovernia Lynnette Schmidtlein. She is survived by her sister, Mildred Toots Wimmer of Rexburg, Idaho; her children: GayDawn Oyler of Boise, Idaho; Monica Clemens (Marc) of Layton, Utah; Sonja Winder (Walter) of Fallon, Nevada; Annie Lyman (Gary) of Orem, Utah; Roycee Olson of Kuna, Idaho; Mel Oyler (Christine) of Pleasant Grove, Utah; Nadine Oyler of Boise, Idaho; and Lynnette Schmidtlein (Paul) of Pocatello, Idaho; 34 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren (with two more on the way).
