Dorothy Catharine Bashaw was born July 19, 1923, in Gravity, Iowa, and died Tuesday, June 11, 2019, in Orofino.

As a child, Dorothy attended Barton Country School and Fairview Country School for the first eight grades. She graduated from Gravity High School in Taylor County, Iowa, May 15, 1941, less than one percent behind the valedictorian.

Dorothy worked for approximately four to five years at the telegraph office in Witchita, Kan., as a clerk/operator, quitting in May 1948 to go home for a month, later coming to Idaho to visit sister Helen and husband Elton Bashaw. She met Russell Ray Bashaw and they married Aug. 22, 1948.

Dorothy was a member of the American Sunday School Union (which later became American Missionary Fellowship), teaching the junior Sunday school class for many years at the Grangemont Sunday School and was also the pianist. For several years she was a member of the Grangemont Homemakers Club.

Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker living in Grangemont in the house Russell built until 1971, when they moved to a house on the Grangemont Road because of Russell’s failing health. After Russell passed away, Dorothy went to work for Idaho First National Bank (now US Bank), working there for 10 years and retiring in 1983 because of her eyesight failing from macular degeneration.

Ten years later, after taking her early retirement, she was no longer able to drive and moved to her current residence on 110th St. in Orofino in 1993, where she continued for many years to pursue her passion of working in her yard and flower beds.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years; her parents, Catherine E. (Folk) and Soloman M. Burright; all of her brothers and sisters; two nieces and two nephews.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino.
