Joseph Cler is the son of Martin Cler and Magdalena Cler. He came to America according to the 1920 census of Champaign County, Illinois in 1890 and was naturalized in 1898.

Joseph organized the Yeomen of America with twenty-three Charter Members in April 1904. He acted as President and also Trustee for two years.

In 1907 at the age of 30 years, he married Theresa Marie Wilhelm, daughter of Peter Wilhelm and Mary Ann Ernst. He was born in Wilsberg, France. Witnesses were Peter Lieband and Angelia Cler. They were married by Father J. Koppes in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Crittenden Township near Pesotum, Illinois.

He was a farmer. He farmed southwest of Pesotum where he lived for a time and later moved to Pesotum.

From the Main Street and Highway 45 in Pesotum, they lived l block south and 1 block west in a two story house on the corner. Their daughter Marcella later
moved into the home as they were living in a garage built into a little house on the same lot.

In 1936 two of the Cler brothers had a double ring ceremony and double wedding in which Joseph and his wife attended--their picture was in the paper. His two brothers were Alfred and Herman.

Joseph died at the age of 66 years and is buried in St. Joseph Cemetery at
Pesotum, Illinois. Joseph's funeral service was held at St. Joseph Catholic
Church in Pesotum, Illinois by Father Peter Zwart, pastor.

birth:8 MAR 1877 Vilsberg, Alsace-Lorraine
death:29 OCT 1943 Pesotum, Champaign County, Illinois, USA

At the time he was born, Vilsberg was in the new country of "Germany", a country that had not existed before 1871. Vilsburg was part of the German province of Alsace-Lorraine, in a German-speaking area that since 1697 had been ruled by France. The area went back to French rule after World War I, 47 years later, long after Joseph had become an American citizen.
Today the area is part of the country of France, but Joseph Cler was born a German citizen.
