Theresia Müeller emigrated from Alsace, France, with her parents (John Anton and Magdelena Müeller) and her siblings in 1847. They embarked at Le Havre on the ship "Queen Victoria" at the end of December, 1846, and arrived in New Orleans on February 22, 1847. The family then traveled up the Mississippi to St. Louis, and then to Peoria, where her father bought a farm. Later, their family name was Anglicized to "Miller", and may appear either way.

She married Albert Ernst in Peoria on March 29, 1849. They had 14 children.

The monument is in the shape of an obelisk. The front (facing the church) of the monument is inscribed "Our Father and Mother", with "Ernst" on the base. Albert and Theresia's inscriptions are on two sides, opposite each other.
