Henry James Outcalt, was a son of Gilbert and Nancy Outcalt. His early life was spent as a farmers boy of that day, and as a young man he gave three years of his life in the defense of his country, enlisting in the Civil War as a Private, September 4, 1861, Company K, 17th., Ohio Infantry and was Honorably discharged Oct. 4., 1864.

On August 21, 1865, he was united in marriage to Miss Delilah Vanarsdalen. To them were born twelve children, eight sons and four daughters. The oldest being a son, Warren C. who died November 30, 1870, aged 2 years, 2 months, 15 days.

He leaves behind him, his devoted wife, Delilah, who has so faithfully cared for him through all the many months of sickness, also the following children survive, Mary, wife of Nathan Braner, Clarence Huber, Perry Driver, Ms. Gettie Trissa Outcalt, Mrs. Cynthia Ann Weaver, Harley Judson, John Arthur, Saluda Jane wife of Forest White, James Henry Jessee and Harvey. He had twenty-six grandchildren and two great grand children. He has three brothers surviving, Hiram, Thomas and Harvey, of Ohio.

He came with this family to Indiana, October 8th, 1887. The sunset of his life came Thursday, September 25th., he was 83 years , 3 months, and 12 days of age. Throughout his life he was a devoted husband, kind father, a good neighbor and citizen.
