One of the earliest pioneers of Canterbury, Mrs. Agnes Blatchford, died recently, aged 78 years, as the result of an attack of influenza. She arrived at Nelson with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Manson, in November. 1842. Two years later Mr. Manson built the first house on Riccarton Plains for the late Mr. John Deans. In 1845 Mr. Manson took up land at Kain's Hill. In 1860 Miss Manson married Mr. Wm. Blatchford, who died about twenty years ago. Since the outbreak of war, Mrs. Blatchford has been a great worker for the Red Cross.
