Biographical Annals of Central Pennsylvania:
Jonathan Spangler Sr, was born in 1803 on the family farm, he was reared as a farm boy with such schooling as was afforded at that time. His education was practical and self acquired, he was fond of reading and had a good memory. His hearing was deficient. His word was as good as his note,. Intoxicating drinks had in him a bitter enemy, he was the first farmer who abolished the jug in the working fields. In politics he was a Democrat until 1862 he became a Republican. He held offices in Miles township, he advocated good roads and other improvements.
He was married in Union County to Miss Catherine Maize the daughter of Michael Maize. The children of this Union were Reuben, who died in Stephenson County Ill, Matilda who married George Dauberman, Ira who died in Brush Valley at the age of 20 years, Margaret who married Benjamin Gramley, she died in 1895, Charles who died in Miles township at 19 years, Simon of Harvey County Kansas, Jonathan our subject, Anna B the widow of Perry Condo of Jacksonville Pa, Edward of Kane County Ill and Uriah of Harvey County Kansas.
Catherine Maize Spangler died Feb 24 1847 and her remains were interred in Rebersburg. Jonathan married for the 2nd time to Rebecca Lutz of Penns Valley who died in May 1888 Leaving no children, The father breathed his last Nov 4 1888.
