The Uriah Curtis Company (1852)
About 365 individuals and 51 wagons were in the company when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Kanesville, Iowa (present day Council Bluffs). Members of the company arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on 29 September and 1 October 1852.
Mary Lee BLAND Ewell, was age 34 when she crossed the plains with her 6 children after her husband William Fletcher Ewell had died from illness. Mary also had a close and dear friend by the name of Mamie Chloe, who also traveled alongside Mary and her 6 children to Utah. Mamie Chloe was a African American Mormon pioneer lady who Mary loved dearly. Chloe helped Mary raise her children.
