Blanche Langford Shields, 95, was born May 17, 1914 in Alachua County, FL to Ossie and John Langford. She was one of 14 brothers and sisters, all of whom preceded her in death except for a younger sister, Cloyce Young of Cornersville, TN. She married Thomas Edwin Shields in 1932 and they had two children, Carolyn Shields Eldridge (Bill) of Winston-Salem, NC and John Thomas Shields (Sharyn) of Tallahassee, FL. She has two grandchildren, Stephen W. Eldridge (Julie) of Amarillo, TX and Tracy E. Coplen (Noel) of Wingo, KY and five great-grandchildren. She was a member of the South Fork Church of Christ in Winston-Salem, NC. For most of her life she was a stay-at-home mother, but at age 60 she went to work at the University of Florida law library where she stayed to retirement at age 70. She lived most of her life in Florida (Plant City, Gainesville, Tampa and Ocala). In 1999 she came to Winston-Salem, NC to an independent living facility. After a fall, she moved to an assisted living facility. She passed away on October 7, 2009 and will be buried beside her husband who died in January 1987.
