Thelma was born in Rural Retreat on March 2, 1924 to the late Luther Baumgardner and Eva Brown Baumgardner. She was preceded in death by two husbands, both Methodist ministers, Rev. Clarence Dunford and Rev. George Pagans. She was also preceded in death by her brother Richard Baumgardner and two sisters, Margaret and Alma Baumgardner and one granddaughter, Ruth Musser.
Thelma graduated from Rural Retreat High School in 1941, She attended her beloved Hiwassee College and then LaGrange College, graduating in 1946 with a bachelor's degree in religious education. In 1955, Clarence died and Thelma returned home to Rural Retreat where she not only was a single parent but caretaker for her mother and sister. Thelma was a longtime member of Rural Retreat United Methodist Church, played the organ for 32 years and taught Sunday school, She had a deep love for music and sang in the choir when she wasn't playing the organ. In 1976 she married Rev. George Pagans.
Thelma is survived by two children, six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held 12 noon April 24th at the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Ruth and Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church at 11 AM preceding the funeral.
