Marie Cash, born September 1, 1907, was the eldest daughter of Sam & Minnie Cash. After graduating from high school, Marie went on to take additional business courses because there were no jobs in the vicinity. In the spring of 1926, she took an office job at Chicago State Hospital. This was also here first trip away from home. There she met her future husband, Bob Russell, and on May 29, 1928, they were married. During the following years, Marie worked as the secretary to the superintendent of the state hospitals at Moline, Manteno and Peoria, Illinois.
Retiring from Peoria, Bob bought a filling station and restaurant just north of Goreville, Illinois where the gas plant in now located. Later he bought a large farm south of Goreville and raised Tennessee Walkers. Bob died of cancer at age 69 in 1974. Marie remained on the farm for another five years. In November 1980, she moved into Marion just two blocks from her sister Bertha Lee Bloodworth.
Marie was very independent and wanted to do things for herself. She always wanted to buy for everyone else, meals included, but she insisted on paying for her own. Marie and Bob had no children, but she always helped to mother all the nieces and nephews.
Marie had to take dialysis treatments twice a week. On March 20, 1984, Bertha Lee stopped by to see if Marie wanted to go vote in the primary elections. Marie had passed away in the night of a heart attack. While she had been in and out of the hospital several times in the previous six months, the Monday before she died she had polished her kitchen floor and gone shopping in the afternoon.
