OBITUARY Iron River Reporter May 16 1924 "Two Miners Meet Death In Mines: First Two Fatal Accidents of Year Reported At Caspian and Forbes Mines" (excerpt)
Two Iron county miners came to their death this week within 48 hours of each other, Joseph Rosa of Caspian dying Monday six hours after being buried beneath a cave of dirt in the Caspian mine, and Alex Tuomi of Iron River dying nine hours after falling 40 feet from a benon [?] in stope No. 7 of the Forbes mine at 10:30 Wednesday morning.
DRILL MACHINE SLIPS Tuomi was engaged in drilling stope No. 7 second sub level Wednesday morning when his drill machine slipped, the shank of the drill throwing him over the bench for a 40 foot drop. He was unconscious when picked up and died at the Iron River hospital nine and one half hours later.
Both men were single and leave no near relatives in this country.
FUNERAL THURSDAY Funeral services were held for Joseph Rosa Thursday morning.
Tuomi was born in Finland and was 36 years old. He had worked at the Forbes mine 59 days. Funeral services will be held Sunday morning from the Finnish Lutheran church and interment will be in the Stambaugh cemetery.
