He was born at Aspen Grove Farm in King George, the youngest of eight, to Thomas B. Gayle, II and Ellen Jane "Nellie" Pratt Gayle.
A graduate of Washington & Lee University, he was a longtime Stafford County farmer.
In his younger years he worked at the FMC plant and taught Industrial Arts at Spotsylvania County High School. He was a very talented woodworker.
Mr. Gayle was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Fredericksburg, where he had been a deacon, elder and lifetime trustee.
He was preceded in death by his wife Frances O. Gayle. Survivors include two sons, Steve Gayle and John Gayle, both of Stafford County; three grandchildren, John Gayle, Jr., Derek James Gayle, Tara Alison Gayle; one great-granddaughter, Paychence Chailey Gayle; one sister, Agnes Gayle Harris of Aspen Grove, King George; numerous nieces and nephews.
