William, known as "Big Uncle Billy," lived at "Topps's Bottom," two miles above the mouth of Big Island Creek, on the west side. He lived all his life in Wythe/Pulaski Counties, Virginia on Reed Island Creek near New River. He was a farmer and a sheriff of Wythe County in 1830. In 1850, as a widower, he lived in Pulaski Co. with unmarried daughter Esther, near sons John and Samuel. His family Bible, which provided many dates for his family, was owned by descendant Martha Dinkins of Mercer Co., WV.
