Tony Clees, Stricken Sunday, Rites Tuesday
Funeral service were held in St. Mary’s Catholic church here Tuesday morning [June 1st] for Tony Clees, 52, well known Remsen man who passed away Sunday afternoon [May 30th] in the Sacred Heart hospital.
Although he had been [in] failing health about four years and of late had been in a gradual decline, his death was sudden when he failed to respond to treatment after a collapse in his home last Friday afternoon [May 28th].
Mr. Clees suffered a severe attack of sickness in his home while preparing to seek medical aid. He regained strength enough to walk to the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schuver, next door. The doctor ordered him to the hospital immediately. He rallied for a day but passed away unexpectedly shortly after having taken his midday meal Saturday [May 29th]. His sister and her son Lucien were at his bedside.
Born in Luxembourg
Tony Clees was from a family of 13 children. He was born December 9, 1901, in the village of Niederkorn, Canton Esch, Luxembourg, and came to the United States and directly to Remsen in 1920 in company with his sister Eugenie, now Mrs. Schuver.
Brother and sister were guests in the home of their brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Frank X. Schmitt, who farmed here. Tony worked there one year, later found farm employment elsewhere in the neighborhood.
Farms With Uncle
After a few years Tony and his uncle, the late J.P. Schuster, went to farming north of Remsen and were bachelor partners 22 years, retiring to Remsen in 1944.
Mr. Schuster died September 1, 1952.
Tony was employed in the Meis feed store here until the hour of his final sickness.
He was one of the community’s highly esteemed men, a lifelong member of the Catholic church and during the past year a member of Msgr. Schemel council, Knights of Columbus.
Rites Tuesday
The body was at the Fisch funeral home which had charge of funeral arrangements.
Wake, with rosary recital, was held Monday evening. Services and the requiem mass were sung by the pastor, Rev. George Theobald, with interment in St. Mary’s cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Larry Meis, Elmer Klein, Marcel Matgen, Ferd Plathe, Peter Lanners and Arnold Galles.
Survivors
Survivors include two sisters and four brothers in Luxembourg, and Mrs. Schuver. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Clees and Mrs. Schuver fortunately visited in their home land only last year, leaving in July and returning in October. It was Tony’s second trip there since settling here.
