John Smith was born in Germany and remained in his land until young manhood, when he came to America landing at Philadelphia and then coming to Clearfield County. He settled on a tract of 1000 acres and cleared 78 acres near the river. He continued to live there the rest of his life, his death occurring at 82 years. He was a man of sterling character, honest and upright in all his dealings. He was a Democrat and was elected top township offices. He married Nancy Jordan and they had 15 children: William, David, Sarah , John, Hannah, Susan, Katherine, James B, Mary Jane, Rachel, Nancy, Elizabeth, Emily, Lavinia & Harvey. The mother was a daughter of Martin Jordan and she lived until age 73, and they both were buried in the old McClure Cemetery. They were members of the Presbyterian Church.
