Dr. Lewis T. Buckman, 89, of Heritage House, 80 E. Northampton St., Wilkes-Barre, a member of the staff at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for 61 years, died there following admission after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Born Jan. 27, 1896, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Dr. Elmer and Elizabeth Thompson Buckman. He was a graduate of the Harry Hillman Academy, Class of 1912; the University of Massachusetts, Class of 1917 and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, Class of 1922. Following graduation from medical school, he served his internship at Episcopal Hospital. Dr. Buckman was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology , the American Board of Otolaryngology and National Board of Medical Examiners.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Wilkes-Barre; the Westmoreland Club; Landmark Lodge 442, F&AM; Mt Horeb Council 34, R&SM; Shekinah Royal Arch Chapter 182, Dieu Le Veut Commandry 45, Wilkes-Barre; Caldwell Consistory, Bloomburg, 33rd degree mason.
Dr. Buckman was a member of the Luzerne County Medical Society, Wilkes-Barre; the Pennsylvania Medical Society; the American Medical Society and the Lehigh Valley Medical Society.
He also served on the Pennsylvania Welfare Commission during three administrations; was a former member of the board of the Wyoming Valley Historical and Geological Society. He served as chairman of the Community Chest Drive in 1952.
Suviving are his wife, the former Abbie Lee; son, Ernest, Pittsburgh; daughters, Mrs. William Sewall, Bath, Maine; Mrs. John Gregson, Woodstock, Va.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Dr. Samuel Buckman, Glen Summit; sisters, Mrs. Ruth Armstrong, Dallas, Texas; Mrs. Elizabeth McDonald, Va.
Memorial services will be Friday at 11 in the First Presbyrerian Church, Wilkes-Barre, with Rev. Dr. Jule Ayers, pastor emeritus, officiating. Private committal services at the convenience of the family in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. The family will receive friends immediately following the services in teh First Presbyterian Church parlor. Arrangements by Graham-McCune Funeral Home.
