Wife of Samuel Allardyce

Alexandra Standard Friday 6 January 1888
DEATH OF Mrs. S.ALLARDYCE. The sad news was received in Alexandra on Monday evening last that Mrs. Samuel Allardyce had died that morning at Ulupua, from Inflammation of the bowels, after a short illness of three days duration, and the painful intelligence cast a gloom over the place, and spread a sadness amongst the residents with whom the deceased lady had lived so long, and by whom she was so deeply and sincerely respected. Both Mr. and Mrs. Allardyce had been acquainted with this district, and had taken a lively t interest in every public and social movement enacted in it, for nearly twenty years past, and it may therefore be readily reconceived how deep was the sorrow on learning that one so well-known and esteemed had been removed from us forever. The deceased lady was of a most kindly and charitable disposition, ever ready to assist all who sought her kindness, a thinking not of herself but of others needs, and by repeated acts of this nature won the goodwill of all classes in the community, a by whom her good name will be long and well remembered. Much sympathy is felt d for Mr. Allardyce and his family in their sore affliction, for it is known and felt that by her death he has lost a devoted wife and they an affectionate and good mother, whose place can never be filled. The remains of the deceased were conveyed by train yesterday from Numurkah to Yea, where they were met by the Rev. T B Swift and a number of Alexandra residents, n and the coffin having be transferred to a hearse in readiness, the funeral procession started for Alexandra, via Whanregarwen and Riverdale, the body passing for the last time through the estate upon which the deceased had resided so long, and where her hospitality had been dispensed with so a free a hand. As the cortege passed through these places the residents joined in, and attended the obsequies at the cemetery, the number being largely added to when it reached the township. The Rev. T. B. Swift conducted the service at the grave in an impressive manner, and delivered a touching address at the close of the ordinary burial service of the church to a large congregation of mourners standing by the open grave. The funeral arrangements were efficiently carried out by Mr. Carison.
