The son of Nathaniel Cartmell who died in 1795, this Nathaniel was twice married. He wed his second wife "Sally" Bean on April 27, 1807. They had 4 children: Mordecai Bean Cartmell (b.1808), Martin (b.1809), and two who died in infancy. He was the grandfather of County Clerk and book author T.K. Cartmell and their home place was "Retirement" near Round Hill which his son Mordecai Bean Cartmell inherited, and where his son, T.K. was raised. "Sally" was a daughter of Mordecai Bean.
