Funeral service for John Wesley Stephens will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2006, in Blanchard St. Denis Chapel with Dr. John Foster officiating. Burial will be at Memory Lawn Cemetery in Natchitoches.

Visitation will be Monday, January 2, 2006, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and on Tuesday, January 3, 2006, from 8 a.m. until service time in the funeral home.

Mr. Stephens, 91, of Natchitoches, died Sunday, January 1, 2006, at Natchitoches Regional Medical Center in Natchitoches.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Natchitoches. He was an independent grocer for almost 50 years before retiring in l982. He owned and operated stores at various Natchitoches locations under the names of Stephens' Grocery, Save Way, Food King, Stop & Shop, and People's Food Warehouse. He introduced the concept of the food warehouse to the Natchitoches area. Mr. Wesley, was an avid horse enthusiast. He raised Appaloosa and quarter horses for showing and racing. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of Woodmen of the World.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Odeal Ferguson Stephens; son, James Wesley Stephens, Jr.; grandson, Cary Wendell Hughes; sister, Pearl Gray; parents, Eli John Stephens, Sr. and Clara Ann Cox Stephens.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary Alice Hughes of Natchitoches; one son, Donald W. Stephens and wife Kay of Trenton, Illinois; one daughter-in-law, Tody Stephens of Natchitoches; grandchildren, James Wesley Stephens, Jr. and wife Jennifer of Alexandria, Julie Stephens of Houston, Texas, Andrea Huebner and husband Gary of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Judd Stephens and wife Marie of Bishop, Georgia, Russell Stephens of Highland Village, Texas; great-grandchildren, Peyton Huebner and Kasey Huebner; sisters, Birtye Gray and Marzette Foster both of Natchitoches, and Ruby Allen of Marthaville; brothers, Elijah Stephens and E. J. Stephens, Jr. and wife Nell both of Natchitoches.

Pallbearers will be James W. Stephens, Jr., Judd Stephens, Russell Stephens, Eric Foster, Kirk Foster, and Ralph Metoyer.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Drs. Christopher Ingram, Javair Pere', and Otis Barnum; staff of the Natchitoches Regional Medical Center and Heritage Manor Retirement and Rehabilitation Center. A special thanks is also given to his personal caregivers Alice Blake, Orelia Bernstine, and Linda Williams.
