Per Otto Johansson (known as Otto) was one of four brothers who came to America from Sweden. Per Otto was born on 12 March 1845 at Fliseryds Gröndal, Fliseryd, Kalmar, Sweden, the son of Johan Magnus Larsson and Anna Kajsa Petersdotter. Per Otto married Johanna Gustava Petersdotter on 13 June 1874 in Långemåla; they were the parents of five children born between 1875 and 1883. On 25 July 1884, leaving his wife and children in Sweden, he sailed on the "Orlando" from Göteborg, Sweden, to Hull, England, took a train to Liverpool, and boarded the steamship "Indiana" and sailed to America. He arrived in Philadelphia on 11 August 1884 and made his way to Ludington, Mason County, Michigan, and then to Custer, Michigan, where his three brothers August Reinhold, Frans Emil, and Johan Alfred, were already living. According to the Mason County, Michigan, death records, Otto died in Custer Township on 20 October 1886 from "complications of diseases"; this record was filed on 14 May 1887 and therefore suspect. According to Swedish records, Otto died in America on 2 September 1886. Lorane E. Johnson ( August Johnson's grandson) related that Per Otto was buried on his brother Frans Emil Johansson's farm near Weldon Creek, Custer Township. Shortly before his death in 1984, Lorane related this information; he had seen the grave as he then owned the same farm. Although his wife and children did not join him in Michigan, Otto's parents did arrive in America on 7 June 1886 and would have been present for Otto's death. Two of Otto's sons did eventually emigrate to America, settling in the Chicago area. - Last edited on 20 May 2021, Thomas Kryssbek.
