August Reinhold Johansson (in America, August Johnson), was born 1 February 1848 at Fliseryds Gröndal, Fliseryd socken, Kalmars län, Sweden, the son of Johan Magnus Larsson (1815-1886) and Anna Kajsa Petersdotter (1817-1899). August was baptized on 6 February 1848 at Fliseryd. His parents moved the family in 1848 in Bankebergs Stora Sandbo, Fliseryd, in 1852 to Böta 4, Långemåla, in 1853 to Böta 9, and in 1864 to Böta 6. He did his military service in 1869 and sailed from Sweden with a group a men from the same area (including a maternal uncle-in-law) on 24 May 1872 on the steamer "Orlando" from Göteborg to Hull, England. They boarded the SS "City of Washington" and sailed on 28 May 1872, sailing from the Port of Liverpool to New York, where they landed on 10 June 1872. First heading to Chicago to find work (the City of Chicago had recently burned), August and a friend eventually walked up along Lake Michigan, eventually reaching Ludington, Michigan, and then later settling in Custer, Mason County, Michigan.

His daughter Anna Hilma Augusta was born on 24 December 1872 at Böta 2, Långemåla socken, Kalmars län, Sweden, the daughter of Klara Sofia Aronsdotter. Klara received permission to leave the parish on 7 August 1876. With her daughter and August's younger brother, Frans Emil Johansson, they sailed on 11 August 1876, also on the steamer "Orlando", from Göteborg, arriving on 13 August 1876 at Hull, England. They took a train to Liverpool where they boarded the SS "Peruvian" which sailed on 17 August 1876 to Québec, where they arrived on 26 August 1876. They crossed into the U.S. at Detroit on the same day and headed to Ludington to be reunited with August. August and Klara were married the following week on 2 September 1876 in Ludington. Young Anna would have first met her father August, therefore, as a four year old child. August and Klara spent the remainder of their lives in Custer where August died on 16 April 1928. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery on 20 April 1928, supposedly in block B6, lot 42, grave 5 (apparently no headstone survives). Written by Thomas Kryssbek, great-grandnephew.
