Lewis S. Althoff was the youngest child of Susanna and Joseph Althoff, a York County, Pennsylvania coach-builder who raised his family in the town of Hanover.

Lewis, a salesman, moved to Baltimore, where he met and married his wife, Florence Morrow.

He apparently became ill around 1910, when the census shows him to have been a patient at Bay View Asylum and Hospital. According to his death certificate, at the time of his death he had been a continuous inmate of the hospital for almost four years.

His grave is unmarked.
