Duke
Col. William Duke, an old and well-known citizen of Danville and Boyle county, was found dead in bed at his home on Third street early this morning. He was on the streets yesterday, and apparently as well as he had been at any time during the past year. It is supposed that he ruptured a blood vessel sometime last night during one of the violent fits of coughing to which he was subject. Col. Duke was in his sixty-eighth tear of his age and a native of Scott County, the son of James Keith Duke. He was twice married, his first wife having been Caroline "Lucy" Hickman. Four of her children survive-Mrs. W.B. Kenny of Woodford county; Mrs. L. W. Tarleton, of Lexington; Mrs. Lucy Gates, and William Duke, Jr., of Independence Mo. His second wife was Miss Ella Duerson, of Louisville. She died several years ago, leaving no children. Col. Duke was a soldier in the Mexican and Civil wars, having cast his fortunes with the Confederacy. He moved to Boyle county in 1854 and for a long time owned and conducted a fine farm. For a number of years past he has lived quietly in this city. Descended from old and aristocratic Kentucky families, Col. Duke was a typical southern gentleman. Brave, courteous, gallant, he was delightful as a companion and faithful as a friend. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church. Due notice will be given of the funeral.
