William Putnam was born in New York on June 10th, 1809. He came from the east and settled in Rushville, Illinois.

The first settlers, Calvin Hobart and Otis McCarney, came to Rushville in the spring of 1823. Schuyler County was founded two years later, including what is now Brown County, which was founded in 1839. The first county seat was Beardstown, but this location was not favored by the residents, so a committee was formed that chose Rushville in 1826. Members voted to incorporate the town of Rushville in May 1831. One of these members was William Putnam.

Nothing more is known about William until he married Martha Ann Smith on October 28, 1830 in Rushville, Illinois. They were the 58th couple to be married in Schuyler County. Martha’s name is listed as Patsey Smith.

William and Martha lived in Rushville for a few years before moving to a farm southeast of Hersman, Illinois, where he lived until his death. In later years, their farm was known to their great-grandchildren as the Uncle John Grover farm.

They had the following children:
John William Putnam 1831-1887
Henry Francis Putnam 1834-1865
Hannah Putnam Kees 1836-1869
Daniel Webster Putnam 1839-1907
James M. Putnam 1840-1908
George Washington Putnam 1845-1862
Almira Putnam Grover 1847-1919
Margaret Elizabeth Putnam Grover 1848-1923
Lucinda Putnam Wright 1852-1913

He died on February 26, 1853 in Mount Sterling Township, Brown County, Illinois. William and Martha are buried in Perry Cemetery in Brown, Illinois.
