Charles V. Stewart, 534 Ocean View avenue, a resident of Santa Cruz for approximately 50 years, and a retired teacher, died in a local hospital Thursday morning where he had been a patient but two days. He had been in ill health for several months.

Mr. Stewart had been a a teacher of a carpentry class in Santa Cruz high school for more than 20 years. He also taught cabinet work in the evening school and gave a series of lectures there. For three years he was a vocational coordinator and his was the first carpentry class in the high school. Several well-known contractors now in business in Santa Cruz had their first instruction under him in the high school. He retired several years ago because cf ill health. Charles Stewart was born in Huron, South Dakota, but his boyhood was spent in Grants Pass, Oregon, and he was graduated from the high school there when the late C. S. Price, father of Miss Berdella Price, was principal.

He attended the University of California for his teacher training. Since retiring from teaching, he has enjoyed his hobby shop at his home, when his health permitted. He was an expert on fine woods and tools and his advice, freely given, was often sought by his friends and former pupils. For a number of years he was affiliated with the First Methodist church and was president of the Boosters class. He also played a cornet in the Sunday school orchestra there. Later he attended the East Side Methodist church, now Grace Methodist church.

On Christmas day 1935 he married Mrs. Eloise Ball of Boulder Creek and Santa Cruz and their home has been on Ocean View avenue. He was a member of the Masonic Order of Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz chapter, Order of Eastern Star.

Surviving are three sons of a previous marriage: Robert G. Stewart of Sacramento; Mervin L. Stewart of Oakland and Verne Stewart of San Leandro. Also four grandchildren survive: Marilyn Stewart of Sacramento, Mervin L. Stewart Jr. and Norman W. Stewart in the air force and Marsha Stewart of Oakland. Five sisters who survive are Miss Ethel Stewart, Miss Ruth Stewart, Miss Opal Stewart and Mrs. Emma Burnett, all of Santa Cruz and Mrs. Grace Wernicke of San Francisco. Stepchildren are Robert M. Ball, Fernum G. Ball, Willard R. Ball and Elliott B. Ball of Santa Cruz and Mrs. Virginia Martinsen of San Francisco and Alfred C. Ball of South San Francisco.

Funeral services conducted by the Masons will be held in the Wessendorf chapel Saturday afternoon at two o'clock. Interment in the family plot in Oakwood cemetery.
