After an incident in 1882 when John Jackson Cozad, shot and killed in self-defense a local well-known rancher, the family each changed their surnames and fled an angry community in Cozad, Nebraska to Colorado, New York and finally New Jersey. In order to disassociate from this scandal, the father John Jackson Cozad became Richard Henry Lee. A son became Frank Southern, and the son named Robert Henry Cozas became “Robert Henri”; later a well-known artist. They are all buried in the same plot.John Anthony Cozad, son of John Jackson Cozad and Theresa GATEWOOD; born (date & place unknown); died 07 August 1933, (place unknown); buried (cemetery & place unknown).

John's father, after a difficult circumstance, moved the family from their residence of about 10 years in, Cozad, NE to live in Atlantic City and New York. Father, Mother and 2 sons, changed their names to become incognito. "Mr. Cozad became Richard Henry Lee (or Richard Lee), Mrs. Cozad became Tessa Lee, John Anthony Cozad became Frank Southrn (correct spelling) and Robert became Robert Earle Henri (pronounced Hen-rye; middle name later dropped)"

John A. Cozad became a physician in Philadelphia, marrying a daughter of the Clarks, of Clark thread.

Hello, my name is Caroline Gaudreault with the Robert Henri Museum in Cozad, Nebraska. I have research done by a family member of the Cozads that says John Anthony and the rest of his family were buried at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island. It says the interments of him and his wife are in lot 355 off Cypress Avenue.
