He served in the American Revolution for three years from 1776-1779. After his service, he moved from CT to Dutchess County, NY. There he was a teacher, and served as a justice of the peace from 1797-1815.
Jabez married twice. First, he married Mrs. Elizabeth Merritt Willson on 16 May 1782. She was the widow of Justus Willson, who owned the property that became Flint Hill. After she died, Jabez married Elizabeth Paine on 10 May 1792. They had nine children, four of whom lived to adulthood, married and had children; three of whom lived to adulthood, but never married; and two of whom died as young children.
Jabez lived most of his life on Flint Hill, in Dutchess Co., near Amenia, NY.
