Michael (sic) R. Michels of Cody, Wyo., formerly of Jefferson county, died Friday, March 13, 1959, at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 21 days.
The eldest of the 12 children of Martin and Ida Michels, he was born Nov. 20, 1885, near Fairbury, and was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Evangelical and Reformed church east of Gladstone. He maintained his membership in the church, and had served on the church council and the cemetery board.
Sept. 14, 1910, he married Ottellia Coopich, and they made their home on farms near Jansen and later south of Fairbury. Three daughters and three sons were born to them. Mrs. Michels died in June, 1922. A son, Kenneth, died in 1949.
Later, Mr. Michels moved to Reynolds, where he worked in the Pauley-Davis lumber yard for about 20 years.
On May 5, 1937, he married Emma Kapke, of Gladstone, where they made their home, and he worked as a carpenter. After her death Sept. 11, 1952, he made his home with his children.
Preceding him in death were his father, Martin Michels, in 1938, a sister, Mrs. Marie Kapke, in 1936, and an infant brother, Harold, and two daughters.
Surviving are his aged mother, Mrs. Ida Michels of Loveland, Colo.; daughter, Maxine, Mrs. Fred Oerter of Reynolds; two sons, Gordon of Oakland, Calif., and Harvey of Cody, Wyo.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Jochens and Mrs. Anna Starck, both of Loveland, Colo., Mrs. Eliza Bell of Willamette, Ill., and Mrs. Wm. Sullivan of Seattle; and five brothers, Frederick of Fairbury, Wm. J. of Denver, Carl of Reynolds, John of Englewood, Colo., and Walter of Los Angeles.
Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon at Zion's Ev. and Reformed church east of Gladstone with Rev. H. Henning, officating. Pallbearers were Dan Arner, Roscoe Beachler, Arnold George, Wilbert Henning, Rudolph Glaesemann and Erwin Kriesel. Burial was in the church cemetery.
